5 Signs of a Termite Infestation You Shouldn't Ignore

Termites work silently and can cause major structural damage before you notice. Here are the early warning signs every Sydney homeowner should know.

5 Signs of a Termite Infestation You Shouldn't Ignore

Termites are often called “silent destroyers” because a colony can feed on the timber in your home for months — even years — before there is any obvious sign. By the time damage is visible, repairs can run into the tens of thousands. The good news: if you know what to look for, you can catch them early.

1. Mud tubes on walls and foundations

Subterranean termites build pencil-width tunnels of mud and soil to travel between their nest and a food source while staying protected. Check brick foundations, sub-floor piers and around pipes. Snap one open — if it is rebuilt within a few days, the colony is active.

2. Timber that sounds hollow

Termites eat timber from the inside out, leaving a thin veneer. Tap skirting boards, door frames and architraves with a screwdriver handle. A papery or hollow sound is a strong red flag.

3. Discarded wings near windows

After a colony swarms, the winged reproductives shed their wings. Small piles of identical wings on window sills or in spider webs usually mean a colony is establishing nearby.

4. Bubbling or rippled paint

Moisture and termite activity behind plaster can make paint blister or look like minor water damage. If there is no plumbing leak nearby, treat it as suspicious.

5. Sticking doors and windows

As termites tunnel through frames they introduce moisture, causing timber to warp. Doors and windows that suddenly jam — with no humidity change — can indicate hidden activity.

Quick checklist

  • Book a professional timber pest inspection every 12 months
  • Keep soil and mulch below the weep holes on brick walls
  • Fix leaking taps, gutters and air-conditioner runoff promptly
  • Store firewood and timber away from the house, off the ground

If you notice any of these signs, don't disturb the area or spray it — that can scatter the colony and make treatment harder. Call a licensed technician for an inspection and a clear treatment plan.
